The Israel Museum visit to South Africa 2019


In November 2019, 20 global Friends of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem travelled to South Africa for an immersion into the diverse world of African art. It was a great pleasure to be a part of this experience and connect with like-minded Friends from all over the world.

In an exclusively designed Art Tour to South Africa for the Israel Museum group:

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TRIP INCLUDED:

3 nights in Johannesburg, visits included:

  • A curated Art Collection Tour of the Constitutional Court.

  • Meeting artist, Mikhael Subotzky in his studio.
  • A curated visit to the David Koloane retrospective at the Standard Bank Gallery.
  • Visit to the studio of South African draftsman, performer, and filmmaker, William Kentridge.

  • Visit to the Apartheid Museum.
  • Visiting Vilakazi Street (Soweto Township)

4 nights in Cape Town, included visits to: 

  • SA National Gallery for a visit and to view the Gabrielle Goliath exhibition. Visit led by curator Andrea Lewis.
  • A curated visit to the Zeitz MOCAA to view the Kentridge exhibition.
  • A heart mapping session with the students of the Lalela Project.

  • A visit to A4 Arts Foundation led by Josh Ginsburg.
  • Visit to the Jewish Campus led by Gavin Morris.
  • Meeting Christopher Peter, Irma Stern Museum’s first-ever curator.
  • Visit to the Norval Foundation Art Gallery, focussing on the Kentridge Sculpture exhibition led by artist and curator Karel Nel.

  • A home visit meeting a South African painter, sculptor and collage artist, Willie Bester
