Into the Wild with Wilderness Safaris

DESERT RHINO CAMP NAMIBIA
The Desert Rhino Camp gives you the opportunity to see desert-adapted black rhino within the spectacular setting of the desert dunes with their iconic euphorbia bushes, striking rock formations, winding dry riverbeds, ancient Welwitschia, and shy animals. This is a place of extremes, home to the largest free-ranging population of black rhino in Africa and many other animals including lion, elephant, giraffe, gemsbok and zebra, amongst others.

The camp is true to the standards expected of Wilderness Safaris. Eight Meru-style canvas tents are raised from the ground on a wooden deck, each with a private front verandah to take in the magnificent vistas, en-suite bathrooms and beds are made up with crisp, white linen. The tented dining and lounge area offers panoramic views and evening meals are enjoyed in the lapa around an open fire under the African stars.

The Camp works in collaboration with Save The Rhino Trust (SRT); an NGO that has been instrumental in the preservation of the local black rhino population. A highly successful component is the community game scouts – many previously convicted poachers – who now monitor over 100 black rhino and are essential to their protection. Wilderness Safaris has seconded these vastly experienced scouts as trackers and guides, and guests now benefit from their extensive knowledge of the habits and movements of rhino, as they go Rhino tracking on foot and by vehicle.

MOMBO CAMP BOTSWANA
Mombo Camp (meaning Place of Plenty) is located in the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. This area boasts enormous concentrations of plains game and predators – providing arguably the best big game viewing in all of Africa. Having been poached out, black and white rhino have been reintroduced to the region with outstanding success thanks to the Botswana Rhino Reintroduction Programme.

Built under large, shady trees and overlooking the floodplains that teem with wildlife all year round, the camp comprises nine spacious raised tents. Bathrooms are en suite, with both indoor and outdoor showers. All the rooms, the sala, long verandah and lounge offer breath-taking views of the Okavango Delta. There is also a plunge pool in which to relax. Many find that the best big game viewing experience starts on the veranda and guests often find animals wandering past, right below their rooms.

Game drives on open 4x4s provide an excellent vantage for viewing the high concentrations of plains game. Lion sightings are frequent and you can also see leopard, wild dog, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, wildebeest and zebra.
