THE EXPERIENCE
African elephants tower over all other animals on earth and nothing quite prepares you for the silent gravitas of these great grey beasts. When you come close to an elephant, any anxiety evaporates as you get the true sense of these sentient animals; they really do exude a sense of knowing and tolerance.

Named after a very special bull elephant, Abu Camp was the original base camp when the first elephant-back safaris in Africa were pioneered 17 years ago. The resident elephants are integral to the experience. From observing their complex herd behaviour to evening feeding, guests are immersed in the lives of the elephants. And, best of all, the elephants then accompany guests into the wild either offering purpose-built saddles on their backs or walking alongside them on foot. The most astounding part of an elephant safari is the quiet with which they move. Literally the only sign that they are in the area is the cracking of the branches that they occasionally break off to munch along the way. As one of the most powerful animals of the bushveld, they protect you without disturbing the natural peace or scaring away other animals.
Situated on the Okavango, just a 25-minute flight from Maun, Abu Camp is set in a pristine pocket of riverine forest in the heart of the Delta. An imaginative use of canvas and pole has created a unique style of accommodation blending in flawlessly with the natural surroundings, so at all times you feel at one with your surroundings.
