“We were camping next to a saltpan in the Kalahari Desert when we awoke one morning to see over a hundred giraffe strolling along the pan. The view of them from our rooftop tent, combined with the magnificence of the rising sun, was more than enough to qualify as a meaningful experience… but nature had more in store for us. Suddenly the journey of giraffe began galloping across the pan. The intersecting silhouettes of their swaying bodies danced across the fiery sky, and their collective gentle gait looked like a single wave moving across the silvery salt pan. As we watched in awe (coffee and rusks in hand), the wave turned toward us and the giraffes ran right past our vehicle. I will never forget the rhythm of the ground shaking, air whipping round us in their wake, and how close their faces came to our elevated position. Afterwards, the dust settled and the sky calmed, leaving our group speechless; each in our own state of humbled contentment after bearing witness to the glory of nature.”
