On 3 February 2011 something quite remarkable and extremely rare took place in the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, a set of Rare Mountain Gorilla Twins were born!
Rare mountain gorilla twins born
Twin male Mountain Gorillas, only the fifth ever recorded set in the history of Rwandan gorillas, were born to Kabatwa as she is endearingly known. Kabatwa has taken extremely well to her new role of motherhood and the young are supposedly doing very well. This is encouraging in light of the fact that mothers only give birth on average every four years and so the birth of twins highlights the extreme sensitivity and endangerement of these beautiful creatures, with fewer than 800 Mountain Gorillas living in the wild today.
