“When I was fairly young and on safari with my dad and the rest of our family, we were out on a regular afternoon game drive when we came across a most irregular sight: an unlikely game of ‘tag’ between a leopard cub and rhino calf. The rhino would pretend it did not know the leopard was there, while the leopard play-stalked the rhino. At the last minute, the rhino would turn around and chase the leopard off. They played happily like this for half an hour. Seeing this unusual interaction between species was incredible. Conventional wisdom says leopards and rhinos have no reason to intermingle and so steer clear of one another in the bush; but I had a magical glimpse into a very different kind of contact – it completely changed the way I think about animals.”
